Hey, it's been a while. Hope you all enjoyed the holidays are that the new year is treating you well. It's been an interesting year for Little Fille and I'm so thankful for all the support I have received, from family, friends, customers and readers alike. Business-wise, I think I'll be moving in different directions, but more on that later.

Carol's Wigs

Sometimes, when I make something new and need to put it online or send photos to buyers asap, models aren't the most ideal way to go. I definitely rely on my trusty mannequin (Hedwig, harhar) to model.

Thanks to a partnership with Carol's Wigs, she always has the best hair!

Here are two of my favourites so far, on our multi-wear turban tie-up headbands:

This wig is my probably my favourite one, reminds me of my favourite, Michelle Williams. The wigs are such good quality for the price - this one can be found here.

Best part for those of you in the UK is that they are based in London, so it won't take ages to come in the post. The wigs are really great quality, especially for the price. I'll take some photos with them on once I get a chance, so you can see them in proper action - though the model definitely does them better justice!

I'm strangely really into wigs - one day maybe I'll be brave enough to wear one out of the house.

Pretty In Pink

In other Halloween news, I finally got to live out my dream of being Andie Walsh for a day and consequently entered the "I Die for DIY" Chictopia contest.

Pretty In Pink is definitely my favourite Molly Ringwald film, and I’ve always wanted to pay homage to the ultimate monstrosity/amazingness that was Andie Walsh’s prom dress.

If, like me, you were simultaneously horrified and fascinated at the Frankenstein mess of a dress that Andie reveals at the end of the film – then you will know how much satisfaction I felt when I sewed that final stitch – knowing that come Halloween, I too, would be PRETTY IN PINK.

Of course, I needed Andie’s partner in crime – so naturally roped in my bff to play the role of Duckie. He did some DIY of his own – cutting an Elvis wig down to Duckie’s original curly quiff, and making his arm patch with some felt.

I made the dress out of the cheapest material I could find ($1 a metre, heeeyyy), and some lace to match. I also made some faux pearl earrings (details, details). Upon further inspection and costume research, I learned that both Andie and I have two piercings on our left ear which is an obvious indication that this costume was meant to be!

Surprisingly, this mess of a dress took longer to make than I expected – so let’s give credit to the incredible fashion designer/fashion icon that was Andie Walsh.

We also entered the ONTD costume contest - ha, God help us!

HALLOWEEN!

So, you may have noticed I've been MIA from the blog for a while - I'm back in Toronto, catching up with family, friends, siblings - and of course, work. We've churned out our winter look book - starring the lovely Lora Hayes and beautiful Juste Juozapaityte from Britain and America's Next Top Model! Both were absolute joys to work with - more on that later.

Anyway, this has been my first Halloween in Toronto in 4 years, so me and my bffs Anne and Shyla decided to go all out. I love Halloween - and it just isn't the same in London, so was thrilled that my stint back home would encompass this wonderful day. As you may have noticed, blogging has been pretty much slack lately. I've been in Toronto since Christmas - preparing the collection, and my wonderful grandma has unbelievably sewn much of the S/S stock that's available in Topshop now!

Now that I'm back in London, things have been quite on the go - trying to catch up with designing collections that will be finished on track with the fashion schedule and overall, just catching up on lots of the boring parts of business.

One of the really great things that has happened is that we're in the front window of Topshop!

We've been inside too, in the lingerie section, which was another really nice surprise.

After working quite hard, moments like these are especially nice as I've got no control over any of Topshop's visual merchandising - so it is really a thrill to see them up there however lame I may sound!

I've learned a lot from being at the shop (and am still learning)- developing more product styles, but less overall product being one of them. That being said, as everything is handmade, only a handful of items are available ready-stock on the site - the rest are made to order, so please be aware when buying.

There are also LOADS OF SALE ITEMS, and I will add more to that eventually - when I get the chance to sort through everything.

Happy New Year, long time no post!

I'm back home in Toronto, and while it's been nice to be home, most of it has been spent in bed, flu-ridden. I even got to ring in the new year half asleep, nursing a migraine and fever. Amazing.

Here are some preview shots of Little Fille's upcoming S/S2011 collection, along with some grey knitted turbans which should be available sooner. I'm doing a shoot with all the new pieces hopefully on Sunday, before I send the samples out to Topshop. (Did I mention we're there for good now? :)

I was lucky enough to win a gold bag from Vero Moda for the opening of their London flagship shop on Oxford St. In reality, I won the bag for my mom, because I wanted to get her a little something special for being so supportive while trying to get Little Fille off the ground. Numerous picture messages later, she decided on a beautiful cardigan - and told me to get something for myself too. I grabbed this winter maxi dress - which was about a foot too long - trusty sewing machine to the rescue again.

Remember my darling cousin Angeline who made me my amazing wallet? My aunt sent me some photos of her and her sister Celestine on Halloween that I just had to share.

Angeline was the toughest pirate in town.

Cel was Lady Gaga....and she made the costume herself - with t-shirts and tie-dye. So innovative! I've created a little monster ;)

These two are definitely fashion designers in the making - already designing and sewing their own clothes. I'm so proud of them!

There's no way I'll win this, but I thought it would be fun anyway. The lovely Kristy Elena at Vogue Gone Rogue is having a very generous blog giveaway - a stay in a beautiful Greek Villa. Halloween

I love halloween. Love, love, love it. Every year (post trick or treating years), me and my friends Rene and Phil have always gone to Church street to look at the amazing costumes and generally feel transported to Halloweentown. That, and a late night snack at Wendy's. Unfortunately, ever since I've moved to London, it's been a whole other story. Case in point, two years ago me and Daniel were supposed to go out as Wayne and Garth, but he refused to put on his wig and glasses, leaving me as a Garth-less Wayne in a crowded London club.

On the Friday, I went to a "Dystopian" themed party and dressed as Rachael from Blade Runner. The only other person dressed up was the DJ - who was a robot. FML.

On actual Halloween, I went as Edie Sedgwick, but I think I channeled a Goldie Hawn from 'Laugh In' type of vibe, only weird looking with a bulbous face.

From across the Atlantic, Phil and Rene were Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. It's nice when friends are lame enough to be lame together from miles and miles away.

What did I do that evening? Braved my horror-film phobia and watched a free screening of The Shining. It actually didn't frighten me too much on viewing - but the scary thoughts remained afterwards and I had to sleep with the lights on. Dork alert.

As much as I love looking at other people's outfit posts, I find mine pretty boring. To make things slightly interesting, I think I'll make a blingee of every outfit's "inspiration." Enjoy.

I got this dress a couple of years ago from the Dalston Oxfam. It was probably something like 4.99 and was floor length. I hemmed it and now I'm kind of like a Sailor Scout with a Russian hat (bought in Lancaster). I paired it with my new favourite JC Litas, which make me normal height. Thanks.

Mail time

The past few weeks have been an amazing time for mail.

1. My absolutelyamazingwonderfulthegreatestshoestoeverexist Litas courtesy of Jeffrey Campbell came in. Did I mention they go with everything I own?

2. I received the best present ever (now a staple in my handbag) made by my super talented little cousin, Angeline. Thank you Angel, how did you know a wallet is just what I needed?

Onto the photos.

In the winter, I dress for warmth and comfort. This often means I look like a shrunken granddad. Grabbing one of my Little Fille headbands makes me look like I at least put some effort into it. Double effort with the Litas. Actual effort required? Marginal.

I am really rubbish at these outfit posts - partially because the camera I use is of an ancient species, mainly because I am inept photography and posing. Most of the shots I have are blurry, and look like I need to pee. Or both.

But the real reason you are here:

The best part? It's personalized!

Isn't it perfect? (wallet, not the face) I definitely think so. And no one else in the world has one. I will treasure it til my dying days.

5 minute chocolate cake man.

I don't know why I'd never heard of this before - I mean, those who know me would probably think, "Oh, who eats an excessive amount of desserts and would probably know of some way to make a chocolate cake in five minutes? Mari, probably."

Lazy and cake are two words that are synonymous with me. Not the sort of lazy where I don't do anything all day (I wish), but the kind of 'ohgod why is the remote control so far away, nevermind, i'll just watch this, maybe it will be interesting' kind of lazy.

Anyway, I made this yesterday:

Twice.

The first time, it came out kind of dry - I think because I left it in the microwave for too long. It says 3 minutes, but I say start with 1:30 - it's nice for it to be all gooey on the inside. Also, I used half an egg. Again, I think this adds to the gooeyness factor. I also used drinking chocolate, even though it said not to - it works, but just don't add the sugar.

From Instructables:

You will need:
* microwave!

o coffee mug
o 4 tablespoons flour
o 4 tablespoons sugar
(no sugar if you're using instant hot chocolate -it's already in there)
o 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
(I used Green and Black's hot chocolate mix - 6 tablespoons, to compensate for the sugar)
o 2 tablespoons whisked egg
(I used half an egg)
o 3 tablespoons milk
o 3 tablespoons oil
o 3 tablespoons chocolate chips
o splash vanilla or other flavoring - try peppermint or cinnamon

step 2 Mix your ingredients

* Add all of the dry ingredients to the mug and mix.
* Add the egg and combine well. It gets pretty pasty at the point.
* Stir in milk and oil.
* Add chocolate chips* and splash of vanilla. Stir well.

step 3 Nuke It!

* Microwave for 3 minutes (start with 2, or even 1:30) in a 1000w oven, or 4 minutes in a 700w oven.

Variations from Squidoo:

Easy Variations on the 5 Minute Mug Cake

* Chocolate Chip - Add chocolate chips of course. Simple but delicious
* Vanilla - Replace the cocoa powder with custard powder. Check the timing and don't cook too long.
* Fruit Sponge - Place fruit in the bottom of the mug and mix in another container. Pour half the mixture over the fruit before cooking as usual. One recipe will make two mugs this way. To make it a vanilla fruit pudding leave out the cocoa and add custard powder. When cooking half the mixture this way, half the timing too. e.g. 1.5 minutes in 100W microwave.
* Very Lemon - Add lemon juice and lemon zest. Leave out the cocoa and vanilla and add extra flour. Check timing for your oven.
* Poppy Seed and Almond - Add almond essence and a teaspoon of poppy seeds. Leave out the cocoa and add a little extra flour. Watch the timing as it might need a little less time than the chocolate.
* Ginger Pudding - Add ground ginger and crystalised ginger chopped finely. Leave out the cocoa and add a little extra flour.
* Chocolate Cherry - Simply add chopped glace cherries, or add cherries and coconut
* Chocolate Peanut Butter - Add some small blobs of peanut butter before cooking. Or put a larger lump in the middle. Chunky peanut butter works best for this
* Surprise Cake - Add a small lump of something interesting to the centre before cooking. Try cream cheese, marmalade or jam. (This will be hotter than the cake so take care)

Halloween is my favourite. Since it's October, I've decided to chronicle all my Halloween costumes since 2003 in one image-heavy post.

2003:

Ah, Gogo Yubari and my terrible oily bangs. This was when I thought turning photos BW and upping the contrast made me cool and artsy. Philip went as a giant tampon and this is the before photo.

2004:

I'm not sure - some type of one handed zombie bride with bad socks, who stole Julian Casbablancas' jacket.

2005:

The following year, Phil stole my costume. Him and Rene were the corpse bride and groom. I was some sort of broken-hearted, decapitated then revived, gothic elf who enjoys late night dinners at Wendy's.

2006:

Lots of recycling going on here again as Phil's used last years mask to create quite possibly the ~~worst~~greatest Darth Maul costume I have ever seen. I used toilet roll and duct tape to create the blaster of my ultimate ~style icon~ Princess Leia. Rene was the same guy from last year but with a gun. Just kidding, I think he was someone from Battle Royale.

2007:

Halloween 2007 was when I moved to England, so I was a bit bummed out cos Halloween is definitely a bigger deal in Toronto than in London. All my previous Halloweens involved a night out on Church St., where the whole street is closed down and you can see the most wonderful, intricate costumes. This costume was completely last minute and actually bought on the day. It was a fun night out though.

2008:

Diy'd again. I think this costume cost less than 5 quid to make. I wore false eyelashes cos my 15 year old asian boy non-makeup face creeped me out.

2009:

Last Halloween, I had a wedding to attend, so didn't plan much of a costume. I made this out of a tea towel, a pair of tights and some underwear, how resourcefully gross. I did go to a Halloween party afterwards, but it turned out to be quite a small gathering of people I didn't really know at the time, and no one was really wearing costumes, and I didn't really want to be the elephant in the room. HAr. When I posted this as my facebook profile picture, someone thought I was wearing a breathing apparatus.

This Halloween, I'm not really sure what I want to be. I really wanted to go to Disneyland Paris because apparently they've got the most wonderful Halloween theme going on, but a trip on the Eurostar doesn't really look likely because it costs loads and loads.

About a month ago, I entered a Jeffrey Campbell shoe design contest via Chictopia. I was thrilled when they also blogged about my Edie Sedgwick collage. (Yay! They were reading my blog, they must've looked at my design too!)

This was my entry:

A few days ago, I saw this shoe posted on the Jeffrey Campbell blog, which was also pointed out to me by a friend of mine.

My initial feelings were mixed. A bit of excitement (Did I win? Did I win???) and a bit of disappointment (Probably not).

I know the JC blog had been filled with vicious comments about the competition for a while now - with other people also miffed about some new Jeffrey Campbell designs seeming a little too inspired.

Anyway, further research led me to find the shoe being stocked at Modcloth - but since then, it has disappeared off the website. The lovely Modcloth employee I spoke to on live support was just as baffled as I was, and said this particular shoe's information was a bit strange, there were no order dates or reasons as to why it was removed.

After a little bit of thinking, I decided to write Jeffrey Campbell, Chictopia and Shop Akira an email to maybe help shed some light on the situation.

At this point, I was feeling quite perplexed - and let's face it, a little upset - at why a near identical shoe to one which I submitted to a contest for that same company, was now being sold/promoted on their website.

This is the email I wrote:

Hi there,

Firstly, I wanted to let you know how much I'm a fan of Jeffrey Campbell shoes. Denmark and Lita are currently on the top of my wish-list at the moment. I was really thrilled when the JC blog linked my to my blog post featuring the Lita shoe!

What I am also writing to you about is regarding the Jeffrey Campbell My Way contest, as featured on Chictopia.

Fair enough. Lots of ideas in fashion are similar - so I fully accept that the sample could have been created in March. To the dismay of much more zealous and supportive friends, I am giving Jeffrey Campbell the benefit of the doubt - but here's my issue.

I would have appreciated if they at least addressed my feelings, or empathized with my situation. A simple, "Yes! We can definitely see why you were concerned, the shoe is totally similar!"

Because. This. Has. Happened. Before.

Spot the Jeffrey Campbells!

What really irks me is that a company who is clearly unabashed about their inspiration and influences, fails to even acknowledge that someone who entered their own contest (because they enjoy the brand, and believe that Jeffrey Campbell original designs are absolutely gorgeous), has previously submitted a design pretty much identical to a shoe that has just been released.

Something completely simple like 'Yeah, totally, they do look similar! Great minds think alike' would have been at least appreciative - maybe some token saccharine words towards a supportive customer who has gone so far as to enter a contest for the brand. Anything that would've been even mildly indicative of the similarities, would have sufficed.

I guess in this blogosphere/internet world, it's easy for designers to feel cheated and vulnerable - especially for small-time business owners who attempt to earn a living from their creativity.

I appreciate that Jeffrey Campbell tries to bring a high-end shoe style to a price range that is a little more in tune with the masses (although, I wouldn't really call them 'cheap'), but when I felt as though (prior to the email) this had been encroaching my territory - I felt really manipulated. This "Robin Hood" style of stealing no longer applied - I'm not a million dollar company - just a girl with loads of student debt who decided to enter a contest to possibly win a pair of shoes she probably wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

This brings us to a whole other topic of fashion democracy - can or should designs be copyrighted? It's such controversial territory. Fashion, for many, is their art, a craft honed and painstakingly worked on. To see something of theirs completely taken away by a larger, high profit making company (not to say that is what happened in this case, but the events that transpired did motivate me to write this post) without receiving any benefit from this 'transaction' seems ludicrous.

I am, however, not above picking up the latest designer knock-off from H&M, when I know very well I can't afford the real-deal - so that's where it gets a bit muddled. Maybe a happy solution would be that those that make under a certain amount a year should be allowed to copyright their work - so big companies won't be able to reap the benefits off a designer that can barely afford to pay their rent!

To bloggers, artists, creators - I think caution is definitely key when it comes to entering competitions like these.

On the plus side, anyone that did like my design - you can now find something very similar at your local Jeffrey Campbell stockist. Maybe you can ask them if they'll make it in a stacked heel instead of a wedge next time.

Cute right? I'm still keen to add a pair of woolly socks.

Krabby Patties

My wonderful cousin Janina came to visit me in the big smoke, and of course, what better way for cousins to spend their spare time in London than to make French macaroons??

The recipe is fairly straightforward - if not heart attack/artery clog inducing - so we thought we would give it a try.

I have to tell you though, I know this is not an original concept because everyone and their mother is - but I am OBSESSED with macaroons. I am pretty much known to my closest friends as the 'macaroon girl' (good thing? bad thing?) Anyway. But I have never ventured into actually making these wonderful, wonderful treats of heaven in your mouth desserts - until now.

Too bad they ended up looking like brown mini-hamburgers.

I probably should've not started this post out with those photos because my end results will now seem anticlimactic. But should you want to make delicious sweet krabby patties at home, minus the lettuce, read on.

(This is from David Lebovitz, by the way)
Ingredients:
1 cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons Dutch process Coco powder( unsweetened)
5 tablespoons granulated sugar
½ cup powdered almonds
2 large egg whites

For the Chocolate Filling:

4 ounces finely chopped chocolates (bittersweet or semisweet)
1 tablespoon butter ( small pieces)
½ cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons light corn syrup

So, preheat the oven to 180. Then mix all the powdered sugar, coco powder and almonds together like so:

Apparently, it helps to grind everything up if you use an actual grinder - or whatever this thing is (I ended up having this, and an electric beater in my flat, that I totally forgot about. I think this is because I went through a baking phase that I blocked out of my mind when I ended up making cupcakes that tasted like cornbread muffins). Anyway, mix mix mix until everything is brown, basically.

In another bowl, beat the egg whites until they form a stiff peak. Stiff peak means they should look like this:

While you're doing that, add the granulated sugar too.

I don't know how eggs can expand to 918023 times their size, but they do.

When that's done, you slowly fold the dry ingredients into the wet ones. Just until everything is mixed together - but only just. Because apparently you're not supposed to overdo it.

This is when we decided to use a flimsy sandwich bag as a piping bag. No.

This is what it looked like out of the oven. Fail.

Eventually, we decided a spoon would be a good substitute. So go ahead and spoon that batter onto the baking tray.

Here is where we went wrong. Crucial point. The recipe said to "Rap the baking tray, then place it in the oven for 15 minutes." We both looked at each other and said, "So what does 'rap' mean?'" We didn't know, so we just put it in the oven.

Basically 'rapping' means, bang the tray against the counter. This supposedly gives the macaroon its little 'foot' - thus avoiding the whole krabby patty aesthetic - unless you're going for that, then hey.

Also, you can leave the batter out for 15-30 minutes before putting it in the oven. This apparently gives the macaroon its hard shell and little foot as well.

I say APPARENTLY and SUPPOSEDLY because I tried this all again including this step, and NOTHING. Not one difference, but there could be other factors. I used 'fruisana' instead of regular sugar in an attempt to cut some sugar out of the recipe. Never attempt to make a macaroon 'healthier' - you'll fail.

Anyway, after 15 minutes, your macaroons should look like this. Or if you waited 15 minutes before putting it in the oven or understood what rapping a tray meant, you should have some feet on those things.

Leave them aside.

Next step, the ganache.

To make the chocolate filling, start by heating the cream and the corn syrup combined in a sauce pan. When the mixture begins to boil at the edges remove from the flame and add the chocolate. Let it stay for one minute before stirring it into a smooth mixture. Finally mix in the butter and let the mixture cool completely before using it.

Anyway, when that's done, spread the filling onto the macaroons and complete your mini-burger!

Told you it was anti-climactic. Yes, they are pretty ugly, but they taste absolutely delicious. If you are patient, leave them in the fridge overnight to let all the flavours blend together. It's so worth it, even if it is really hard to do.

Little Fille A/W 2010 shoot

Last Sunday was a madly fulfilling experience. I'd been working so hard on getting the collection ready for my manufacturers for the past couple of months (eat, sleep, headbands), so finally seeing everything come together was like a dream come true. Bit much? Maybe so, but I'm really, really pleased at how everything turned out - especially since I didn't sleep at all the night before because, as Murphy's law would have it, I felt immensely sick (but I won't disgust you with those details).

The shoot was held in South Bermondsey, at a studio owned by the very talented George Garnier, who was lovely and extremely helpful throughout the day. If you ever need a studio to shoot in, I highly recommend contacting him.

My photographer, Natasha Marshall, was as sweet as can be, and really pulled through with beautiful shots and was so composed through the day, despite some minor setbacks. It was her idea to bring in the black balloons and coloured confetti, and I think that's what really helped pull everything together!

Wai Fung, our makeup artist was also a dream to work with. Extremely professional and he created all the looks exactly as I had imagined. The models looked like flawless dolls, and he was always nearby, makeup brush in hand, ready to touch up some lipgloss or brush the fake snow off the model's eyelashes!

I was also lucky enough to have the Knapinska sisters on board to help me style. Edyta, a friend I met on the MA course at St. Martins, prefers to be simply known as my muse. Iwona, her sister, was right there in all the action, combing the models' hair, and making sure everything was picture perfect. I was so, so grateful they could be there, as they really helped pull everything together - and thanks to E, we've got all these great behind the scene shots.

All the models were such lovely girls, and a pleasure to work with. Each had their own unique look and brought something different to the table.

Striking and ethereal, Keeley Sheppard is definitely one to watch. Watching her work the camera was really inspiring, she really knew exactly what to do to make the shot.

Olivia Dunn, fresh faced, with the sweetest personality to match. At just 15, Olivia was just as professional and elegant as any veteran model.

Sonya Cullingford, a dancer with the most amazing doll-like eyes, was a joy to work with as well. Her dance training really shone through, as she knew how to poise herself in ways that would work for the photographs.

I was so happy each model was able to make it, as I am admittedly picky when it comes to choosing models. Working with all three was wonderful and surpassed all my expectations.

Also, a special thank you to Daniel, who helped me lug all the stuff to the shoot, stayed all day for it, and got caught in torrential downpour to help find a takeaway in case any of the team got hungry. To Natasha's cousin, who helped blow up the balloons. And to Lucy, for carrying that giant fan all the way to work just so I could use it for the day. And to my parents, for supporting me with this too.

Ha, sorry, reading this over sounds extremely gushy, my apologies, but I am just really grateful for everyone who made this shoot happen. I can't wait to get all the pictures and show you guys. Hopefully everyone sees a headband they'll love and want for themselves!

Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life

When my friend Philip (favourite movie: Trainspotting, nickname: Pedophil) was dating a high school girl while we were nearing the end of university, I took him to Chapters and showed him this page:

Then, when there I read about the film's open casting call for extras online, I urged him and my another friend to go (I was in in London, so couldn't). They didn't make it - but one of their sisters did (Hi Christine!), and she kindly gifted me with a coin she managed to ~~steal~~ find on the set - what a sweetheart.

Needless to say, I am really excited about this movie, partially because my hometown's finally on the big screen not disguised as New York or Chicago. Yes, okay, so I'm a little homesick.

Last Tuesday, Daniel and I went to see Edgar Wright in conversation with Joe Cornish. It was brilliant and we got to see clips of Edgar's old films which were the perfect combination of genius, hilarity and slight embarrassment.

At the end of the evening, they were running out of time so could only take one more question. They said it had to be a really, really good question, so most people's hands went down.

One guy still had his hand up and they said something like, 'Okay, sir, I hope this is a good question' and he replied 'Yes.'

His question was, 'Hi, I'm an aspiring filmmaker. My question is how do you feel when filmmakers have really good debut films, like Moon and District 9? Do you like it when filmmakers make debut films, and when they are like Moon and District 9?'

I will let you make up your mind as to whether or not that was a good question.

On Wednesday, since I am extremely skint (no travelcard, shocker), so I debated whether or not to go to Leicester Square to catch the red carpet stuff for the premiere, and ultimately decided yes.

I'd never actually been to a Leicester Square premiere, and the internet told me the size of the premiere would be "average," so why not? They were wrong. Size was massive. Here are some photos.

I didn't get close enough for anything to be signed, but a lovely man was emptying cardboard posters off a truck so I managed to get a souvenir. It was a very uncomfortable bus ride home. Well worth it though, as it goes with this giant Michael Cera head.

70s style

The hair. The button down shirts. The crisp denim. Beautiful, poised, fresh and somehow, it all looks so effortlessly cool (Even though it would probably take me 3 hours and a thirteen types of hair masks for my hair to get remotely close to looking like Jaclyn Smith's).

My go-to summer look has pretty much been a button-down shirt tied at the waist a la Cheryl Ladd. Not very imaginative, but it works.

They key to "Charlie's Angels" chic is denim, denim, denim. I won't be throwing away my skinnies, but adding a wide legged flare every once in a while is a nice way to mix it up.

Wallpaper Rose

The other day, I received two things in the mail. 1)a council tax bill 2)a beautiful package from the lovely Louise at Wallpaper Rose. Thank goodness for the latter.

The packaging was so sweet, complete with woven label and the tissue was folded into a cute little envelope. I'm a sucker for details.

One of the best parts about the necklace is that it's a locket. I put a photo of my little brother and sister in it to carry them 'round wherever I go. Creepy or sweet?

My cousin Janina has been staying over for the past couple of weeks and we have been doing things like making macaroons, attempting to paint our nails using water and swirly tie-dye methods - those super thrilling events will be on the blog soon. At the same time, I am trying to juggle all my freelance jobs plus finishing up the samples for the A/W collection, so it can manufactured by the end of September. I am really excited, but also scared (and broke) because of this venture. I am very grateful for my parents who have supported me throughout this ordeal - so fingers crossed it will pay off and I can make them proud.

Everything is looking really nice though, I've made some really cute earmuff/headpieces that are Princess Leia meets Blair Waldorf in the snow. I hope you will like them - I know I do!

In the meantime, here a photo of me looking like I do nothing but sip Thai iced teas and eat salt and vinegar crisps. This photo is dedicated to Anne Borja, who never blogs, but I guess that's okay. Another project that has been a longtime coming is a collaborative capsule collection designed by myself, Jack and Daniel. Though we've been working on this project for a while, we've been having loads of trouble trying to come up with a name for our label - any suggestions?

They designed the patterns via YouTube compression, and I designed the garments. We produced a limited edition run of the pieces with the help of a talented seamstress in Toronto named Lucy Lirion.

Through the lovely people at Sketchbook magazine, we were able to assemble an impromptu shoot at their 2 week pop-up studio off Carnaby St in central London. (Pop in if you're in the area! It's a great concept.)

I must confess, I'm pretty into makeup. I have a pretty substantial collection and even though I probably only use less than 5% of it, somehow I'm always wanting to buy more. Unfortunately, my bank account won't let me indulge too much, but a makeup bargain or two won't hurt, right?

So when Superdrug's new line Makeup Academy launched, offering each item at £1 each, I was intrigued. How can you go wrong at £1? (You can though - I'm looking at you, Pound Shop razors)

I picked out some shadows and they were quite impressive - they were super pigmented and had pretty decent staying power. £1 each!

Here's how I incorporated shades 16, 11 and 12 into an everyday look.

For my eyes, I used shade 16 all over the lid, shade 11 in the crease, and shade 12 on the outer corner. I like to use a flat brush(bottom) to pack the colour on, and for the crease/corners and blending, the rounded brush (top).

I used Clinique cream shaper duo in Brown Sugar, which I stole from my mom's collection.

This guy is one of my favourites.

I have been a fan of Charles Bukowski's novels since my later high school years - but neglected to read his poems because I'm not big on poetry. (Okay, maybe at 13. Ones about love and abortion ripping apart tiny babies in wombs. I know you know the one, Catholic high school girls)

Thankfully, I spotted this gem of a novel at the used book shop, that changed my mind about poems once more - or at least Bukowski's.

This biography is a very insightful read, and just happened to include snippets of Bukowski's poetry throughout.

And they are truly wonderful. Here are some of my favourite passages:

“I walked into a dark hall
where the landlady stood
execrating and final,
sending me to hell,
waving her fat, sweaty arms
and screaming
screaming for the rent
because the world had failed us both.”

"in the cupboard sits my bottle
like a dwarf waiting to scratch out my prayers.
I drink and cough like some idiot at a symphony,
sunlight and maddened birds are everywhere,
the phone rings gamboling its sound
against the odds of the crooked sea;
I drink deeply and evenly now,
I drink to paradise
and death
and the lie of love."

His writing is succinct, never flowery but always beautiful - to me at least. For me, what really makes a Bukowski novel is its pace, something he had complete command over.

Sure he may have been a misogynistic, shameless drunk, but the man could write. I have tried to read other novels from the misanthropic male point of view, but just couldn't stomach the depictions of women and the vulgarity of the protaganists (I'm talking to you, "Average American Male") - which is strange, because Bukowski is as crude as it gets. I just feel like a lot of "stereotypical" male voice novels lack the wit and pace needed to overlook the blatantly misogynistic undertones that permeate some of this genre. Plain and simple, Bukowski makes me laugh, despite my disgust at some of the things Henry Chinaski does.

In his own words, "Genius might be the ability to say a profound thing in a simple way."

It's surprising just how autobiographical Bukowski's novels are. I felt as though I had heard it all before because Chinaski's life pretty much mirrors his own. The book includes letters from one of Bukowski's girlfriends, and though they were definitely interesting and relevant, there was something all too voyeuristic about it. And excuse me for this, really, but I wrote a poem.

I'm betting that spending time online looking for dresses you can't really afford is probably not the best way to productively spend a Wednesday afternoon, but one click leads to the next and before you know it, you're stopping yourself from reaching for your nearest credit card.

Daniel has been making a short film and I have been making the costumes and 'acting,' alongside the talented Kerr Logan.

I don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty sure Daniel's the next Cronenberg. This film was shot in Toronto and London and I think you will be thoroughly impressed. If this whole headband thing doesn't work out, I guess I wouldn't mind being the next Cronenberg's costume designer.

Since it's super sweltering outside, I think it's a great time to post some photos of me in my brand new hat on my brand new vespa scooter.

Happy Father's Day, Dad. I think you read this sometimes (I'm still not adding you on facebook, though)

Some dad facts on the top of my head at the moment:

My middle name is Antoinette because my dad's middle name is Antonio.

He is a great cook. Once he made some Filipino noodles for my kindergarten pot-luck and my teacher asked for the recipe.

When I was little, he would often pretend he was dead when I tried to wake him up. I am sure this has left some detrimental psychological effects somewhere along the line, but it hasn't stopped me from pulling the same act on my little sister!

When he would call me from downstairs when I was upstairs, he would sometimes yell "There's a ghost!" to get me to move faster. (I once jumped an entire flight of stairs because of this.)

As a child, I was allowed to draw with pen on him all the time...but wasn't allowed to wear makeup/nail polish until my late teens.

We watched all the Star Wars episodes 1-3 in the theatres together.

"Mr. Bean" was our favourite TV show.

I used to pull out his grey hairs for 10 cents a hair.

He used to do donuts in the car parking lot during winter because I liked how it felt like an amusement park ride.

We used to use garbage bags as sleds in the winter.

Baby Fille?

Before I mailed off an order to my aunt, I took a couple of photos of her custom pieces. She asked me to design headbands for children aged 2 - 5, which was an interesting task. These heart headbands are very lightweight and fasten using velcro.

In case anyone was curious and was wondering where I was with Little Fille - I am currently in talks with manufacturers and am aiming to get my Autumn/Winter collection produced. This change means that you just might be able to find Little Fille stocked in a city near you sometime in the future.

I will also continue to feature one-off custom pieces that you can order directly off the website in due time - stay tuned.

My dad recently sent me an email saying, "Justine says Hi Ate I miss you, I love you and I want you to stay here forever. I don't want you to go away....come here soon....."

One of the hardest parts about being away from home is being away from my 6 year old sister, Justine (My brother Aidan too, but that's for another post). She is joy - pure joy in tiny little human being form. And I'm not just saying this because she's my sister, she's got plenty of glowing reviews from everyone she meets.

Her forte is boy advice: "The trick to make a boy like you is buying him lots of toys. If he doesn't like toys, then you can buy him t-shirts." Truer words have never been spoken.

I wrote this a long time ago:

Justine

My entire family knew before I did—aunts, grandparents, second cousins twice removed. And me, my dad’s only daughter, the one that lived with him for four years after the divorce, was the last to know.

The baby was due in a month.

More changes were to come. My home - the one I happily called my own when I was eight, where I played dress-up and danced bare feet across my back yard - was sold to a shady looking business man who wanted all of our curtains for free.

And then she came: my half sister, swaddled in cloth, staring back at me with her alien eyes.

 It was real now; she was here, like a porcelain doll in flesh and bone. Tiny hands held my fingers with such certainty, the newborn with an iron grip.

I cradled and rocked her back and forth; I told her stories and sang her songs. Justine, with coal black hair and rainbows in her eyes, looked mischievous when she smiled. Justine, who smelled like peaches and jellybeans, never ate anything green. Justine, my sister, needed me like I needed her.

She was a sweetheart, a terror; the little girl with hair that fell in her face, who followed me around like a shadow during all my visits home. She drew landscapes on paper and painted portraits on carpets and on the walls.

Justine dressed herself in printed tights and frilly skirts, hid nail polish and lip-gloss in her pink backpack, and cut her own hair with safety scissors under the dining room table.

 When an ex-boyfriend broke my heart, her tiny hands wiped the tears from my eyes; and when she scraped her knee on the sidewalk, I wiped hers.

It was true love with her, the girl who wanted to be exactly like me in every way - even when I didn’t want to be like me at all.

At 23, I was to start anew. The airport was my first step towards a new life in London, a fresh start in fashion journalism, a struggle to be independent. I was burdened with two suitcases and a pile of student loans; uncertainty and apprehension; hesitation and excitement. Big leaps reap bigger rewards.

Only I was too scared to jump.

I felt the tears well up in my eyes, saying ‘So long,’ to my best friends, ‘Arrivederci,’ to my family, ‘See you soon,’ to a city I knew so well. And my sister, my darling sister, with all her three-and-a-half year old wisdom, hugged me close and told me she’d miss me.

Justine, who married princes in tablecloth gowns, feasted on plastic French fries and fake ice cream. Justine, who knew the words to all my favourite songs, was the hardest one to leave.

“Here,” she handed me her prized possession, a small pink bear. It was her lifetime companion, a confidante of cotton stuffing and fake fur. I smiled but declined.

“She’ll take care of you,” she said.

With wide-eyes and hands covered in marker, Justine loved me more than her very favourite toy. She was my half sister, my hero in pink overalls. But half means never complete: half empty, half hearted, half finished. Half full.

Save for Justine; that was never her. She’s my sister--entirely whole.

Sunday roast

When I first came to England, I had no idea what a Sunday roast was. Now I am probably Sunday roast's biggest fan.

Wikipedia says, "The Sunday roast is a traditional British main meal served on Sundays (usually in the early afternoon for lunch), consisting of roasted meat, roast potato together with accompaniments, such as Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy." It also says Sunday roasts are popular in Canada, but maybe they are lying about that part.

Anyway, if you live around Brixton, you should definitely try the roast at The Rest is Noise because it is MASSIVE and 2 for £12. It is honestly the biggest portion I have ever been served anywhere ever.

Old new dress

Today was a beautiful, sunny day in London.

I went to get some last minute supplies for a bulk order I've been making for my lovely aunt - turns out I didn't have enough blue thread after all. It's actually my first foray into making children's headbands, so it was interesting trying to come up with something light, comfortable and adjustable. Thanks, velcro. This headband is adjusted to the biggest size possible, so it can also be used by an older sister, mom, or a baby with a really big head.

Today was also the first day I ditched my tights this year. I decided on an old crocheted Topshop dress I bought 4 or 5 years ago, and found an old photo of me wearing it.

Here I am wearing it today. Sorry the photo is really washed out, but that's testament to how sunny it was.

I usually enjoy looking at these on other people's blogs, but attempting to post one myself has been a bit tortuous. Here is what I've been wearing the past couple of days anyway. Ok.

Sorry this is a bit blurry, but iPhones can only go so far late in the night. I don't really have a giant bottom lip, I'm just making a face.

The problem with being 2'4" (5'2") is that you lots of outfits can dwarf you and make you look like a tiny man dressing in giant's clothes. Despite that I am aware of this fact, I still have that problem. Case in point. I still really like this jacket though. If you are ever in Brighton, definitely check out Wolf & Gypsy, they have an amazing selection of vintage pieces. Not everything will make you look like an old man. Promise.

Topshop makeup haul and review

I'll admit it, I am a bit of a cosmetic junkie - a bit ironic since I'm often too lazy to put it on! Naturally, when Topshop announced they were going to be releasing a makeup line, I couldn't wait to have go myself. Priced very reasonably with most things well under a tenner, the line did not disappoint. Here's my review of the four products I did buy (I had to stop myself from buying the whole store).

Kohl in Saddle - £4

This dark chocolate brown liner (with a hint of shimmer) is really velvety and easy to put-on. It doesn't tug on your skin and glides real smoothly. Lasting power pretty decent for 4 quid.

Blush in Neon Rose - £6

Pretty creme blush that's natural and 'pop' at the same time.

Crayon in Sun Shower - £7

This is really, really gorgeous stuff. Super pigmented, super velvety. It's part of the S/S 2010 trend collection so you might want to stock up. Cute video how-to tutorial on the Topshop website. I think I may just have to buy the silver version.

My top five skincare picks

While I'm busy preparing a new collection for June, I thought I might as well use this blog to share some of my favourite things with you all. I guess I'm risking losing some followers by doing this, but hey, maybe I'll gain a couple too.

Before I start listing my top five skincare products, I should probably tell you a little bit about my skin - in case any of you out there are on a similar boat. Basically, it has multiple personality disorder - it can't decide whether it's oily or dry or if it wants to co-operate or make my life miserable. Oily? Check. Dry patches? Check!

Recently, it has been quite well-behaved, but when I was 19-20, it was acne city - thank God for concealer. To generalize, I would say I have an oily t-zone, but also get a bit flaky around my nose, cheeks and chin. Hurrah!

Here are my holy grail products that help keep my skin behaving.

1. Nivea's Natural Beauty Radiance Boosting Eye Cream

Oh hey undereye circles, why must you plague me my whole life? I've probably cornered the market on concealers and undereye creams, and I've haven't liked anything enough to buy twice. But this cream will probably be the first. To be honest, I don't think it's doing anything 'clinically' to reduce the darkness, but it is hydrating and does disguise the problem, which is enough for me. Here's what Nivea says anyway: "The Radiance Boosting eye cream, enriched with Mango Milk, hydrates throughout the day whilst visibly brightening and refining the eye area. The light-reflecting formula with Cashmere Proteins immediately gives the delicate eye area a natural-looking and even radiance."

Here it is applied to my hand thickly on the left and more 'subtly' on the right. It's the sheen of the cream that brightens up the eye area quite nicely, and it doesn't sink into fine lines like some traditional concealers tend to do. I really like it.

2. Shu Uemura White Recovery EX cleansing oil

Washing oily skin with oil - really? Okay, it may sound weird but this stuff is golden. I think that after years of trying to strip oil out of my skin, it responded by producing even more oil, which was definitely counter productive. This stuff is takes everything off -including mascara - and doesn't leave your skin feeling tight or parched. It really does leave my skin feeling nice and clean. No breakouts and less oil, what more could I ask for?

3. Lush Eau Roma water

Smells pretty, is full of rose and lavender water to soften the skin, doesn't leave my skin feeling dry, and is only £3.25 a pop. Why not?

4. Avene Skin Recovery Cream

Trufax, my skin was going mental last summer and I started getting these random little bumps on my cheeks and chin. So off I went to Boots to find a quick fix to my dilemma (which never often works, unfortunately), but this time, lo-and-behold, it did. "This highly effective cream quickly calms irritation and restores the skin’s natural defense mechanisms. Created to be hypoallergenic for sensitive skin Avene Skin Recovery Cream soothes and mositurises skin prone to redness and irritated by climatic conditions." Within a couple of days, my skin returned to normal and I'm pretty sure it's thanks to this cream.

5. Lush fresh face masks

Lush face masks are kind of like celebrity boy crushes - they are all so good and you can't decide who you love most, but more than often you are in truly in love with just one for a period of roughly 2-3 months. In high school, Cupcake was my bff. It was capable of sucking the oil right out of my skin and soothing even the grossest of spots. I always had this in my fridge and my mum once thought it was a dessert and almost ate it. True story.

Right now, my love affair is with Catastrophe Cosmetic. "Fresh blueberries are rich in beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to reduce inflammation and act as a mild antiseptic. Soothing chamomile, Irish moss and almond oil work with the gentle cleansing action of calamine to save your skin." In a way, these masks are 100% better than celebrity crushes anyway, because they love you back.

Here is a picture of me with the mask on, and freshly out of the shower without. How glamorous. Yes, I look mental but hey, it's only the internet.
